Following the success of meta music documentaries such as Pavements, the most famous hip-hop group from the Low Countries now gets its own unconventional portrait: THE MAKING OF DE JEUGD VAN TEGENWOORDIG. Celebrating their twentieth anniversary, the film does not take the usual behind-the-scenes approach; instead, it throws open the emergency exit. What began as chaos between Wiwa, Vjèze Fur, Faberyayo, and Bas Bron has since evolved into a cultural phenomenon that has been setting the tone for two decades.
This energetic documentary is far from a traditional biography. As the group prepares for their anniversary concerts at the Ziggo Dome, defining moments from their career are brought to life through a blend of actors and unique archival footage. Fact and fiction intertwine in a playful way: interviews, memories, and fabrications flow seamlessly together to create a portrait of a group that continues to reinvent itself.
THE MAKING OF DE JEUGD VAN TEGENWOORDIG is a delightfully unrestrained ride. The film is exactly like the group itself: unpredictable, sharp, and still at the top of its game. From their breakthrough with Watskeburt?! and their lowest point in a hotel room in Brussels to their iconic status today, this is a tribute to twenty years of creativity and innovation in Dutch music.
