A legendary funk voice with a touch of soul jazz

The American trombonist Fred Wesley has built up an impressive track record, including his years in the bands of James Brown and George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic. His powerful sense of funk is legendary. In a trio setting, he explores a shared love for the soulful jazz tradition of Hammond icon Jimmy Smith.

Fred Wesley is one of the most influential trombonists in black music; generations of up-and-coming talent study his classic albums and playing. What began as a tribute has grown into a tight-knit trio with a distinct groove and strong mutual interaction. Their repertoire draws on classic organ jazz, underpinned by experience, timing and swing.

Preview - Re:Context

Music is inextricably linked to broader cultural trends. The Re:Context series explores the ideas, influences and context that have given rise to beautiful music. Each instalment offers a different deep dive into a specific theme, genre or the life of a particular artist.

As part of this Re:Context, Fred Wesley will be interviewed before the concert by the Belgian trombonist Nabou Claerhout.
