The Amsterdam music platform Space is the Place lands in Leuven with a double bill.
With the quartet Ruidoscuro, Frank Rosaly combines his Puerto Rican roots with his background as an improviser, composer, and jazz musician, musically exploring his homeland. In addition to acoustic instruments, he uses electronics to create otherworldly reflections of indigenous instruments. Their music tells a dark and gripping story in a layered context of revolving polyrhythms, bitonal melodic material, and spiraling harmonic structures. Strict sequential patterns against improvisation embody ritualistic musical movements. The raw energy of this powerful quartet delivers a dark narrative—ideal music to lose oneself in.
Bassist Farida Amadou is one of the most striking new figures in the improvisation scene. She plays the bass guitar like no one else does: unpolished and almost messy, metallic in timbre, with a fierce emphasis on rhythm. As a self-taught musician, she draws the most exciting sounds from her Fender bass. Amadou asserts herself both nationally and internationally through collaborations with artists like Peter Brötzmann, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ken Vandermark, Hanne De Backer, Moor Mother, Colin Stetson, Audrey Lauro, and Julien Desprez.
From December 13 to 15, 2024, the Amsterdam music platform Space is the Place will tour Belgium with a new concept: Interlinie. This three-day event connects Dutch and Belgian improvisation, experimentation, and jazz, facilitating cross-pollination. This first edition brings the explosive quartet Ruidoscuro together with like-minded Belgian musicians on every stage—and who knows what new formations may emerge.
