Ferenc Balcaen debuts with SCAPEGOAT on the stage of DE SINGEL.
He has only just graduated as a director from RITCS, but Ferenc Balcaen is already one of the most promising creators in the Brussels and Flemish performing arts scene. With SCAPEGOAT, he makes his debut on the stage of DE SINGEL. Balcaen takes you to an inferno-like setting where time stands still, and there is no longer a distinction between day and night. Figures with melted faces wander around, so deformed that they seem unidentifiable. Soon, their deformation is seen as a disfigurement, and a process of dehumanization begins. They have nothing left to lose, and so these scapegoats surrender unrestrainedly to their wildest desires and urges.
SCAPEGOAT is a despair-driven dance of violence and eroticism. Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and the sonata Franz Liszt composed in response to that canonical epic, Balcaen creates an alternative world where your understanding and compassion are fully put to the test.
