"Is the theater not a poetic dream, and is the stage anything other than a mouth speaking in its sleep?"
Snow White, after the queen's attempt on her life, returns to the palace to negotiate the outcome of the fairy tale. Cinderella doubts her prince and takes pleasure in being hated by her stepsisters. Sleeping Beauty, the royal family, and their courtiers are not pleased when they are awakened uninvited from their sleep and forced to resume their duties.
The Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956) reworked these Grimm fairy tales with poetic seriousness and playful jest into dreamy theatrical stories about characters who no longer want to stay within the prescribed storylines.
