As part of artist Julianknxx's exhibition Chorus in Rememory of Flight at DE SINGEL, we will screen two films from ‘Black Corporeal’, namely ‘Breathing by Numbers’ and ‘Between this Air’. After the screening, Julianknxx and curator Shamisa Debroey will engage with the audience.
Julianknxx's polyphonic art practice, rooted in poetry, invites new perspectives on history and black culture, and encourages reflection on the place of the global black diaspora.
‘Black Corporeal’ is an ongoing film series taking a critical look at the relationship between materiality and the black psyche. Julianknxx explores the idea that our ability to breathe - an act constantly challenged by air pollution, stress, fear and societal prejudice, among other things - is more than the ability of our lungs to breathe air. According to him, it is a reflection of the way we live individually and together.
