Origins, Beats & Resistance

From 22 till 25 January, PULSE Music and Film Festival takes over De Studio in Antwerp with four days of screenings, panel discussions, interviews, book launches, and live acts. This edition sheds light on community, pioneers of electronic music and jazz as a space for activism. The programme moves between music documentaries to DJ sets, stretching from the early evening till late-night dancefloor moments. Here’s a selection of what we wouldn’t miss!
Punk the Capital: Building a Sound Movement

Punk The Capital dives into Washington D.C.'s punk movement of the late 1970s, where radical ideas, friendships, and unconventional music collided at the heart of American politics. Featuring icons like Bad Brains, Fugazi, Ian Mackaye, and Henry Rollins, the documentary captures the raw energy that shaped this punk history, and still resonates far beyond D.C.

Sisters with Transistors is more than just a music documentary; it’s a tribute to the women who quietly shaped electronic music and the way we listen. The untold story of fascinating composers like Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Delia Derbyshire, Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, and Laurie Spiegel reveals how machines became tools of liberation in a male-dominated field. With Laurie Anderson's voice narrating and rich archival material, the documentary is a sonic journey and a long-overdue act of recognition.

Dr. Lektroluv (Live)

For over two decades, Dr. Lektroluv has been at the forefront of electro and jackin house music. His early 2000s sound paved the way for the revival of electro and introduced a generation of clubbers to the genre. Known for headlining major festival stages, he now brings that relentless energy to PULSE’s Great Hall for an intimate, late-night set.

Sun Ra: Space Is the Place

This 1974 sci-fi musical follows avant-garde jazz pioneer Sun Ra as a cosmic prophet who travels through time and space in a music-powered spaceship. He convinces his community to break free from their earthly shackles for a utopian planet, while battling The Overseer, a satanic godfather disguised as a pimp. A cult classic, Space Is the Place reflects on Black identity, liberation and the power of music, and is widely referenced as one of the first Afrofuturist cinematic works.

A Life in Waves offers an intimate portrait of composer and electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani. From her early piano lessons, her million-dollar advertising work, to New Age music, and the rediscovery of her beloved Buchla synthesiser, the film takes us through Suzanne's mind and offers a female perspective on the often complex world of electronic music.

The Life and Work of Christophe Szpajdel: Lord of the Logos (Keynote)

For decades, Christophe Szpajdel – also known as Lord of the Logos – has designed iconic logos for thousands of heavy metal artists. From underground Finnish bands to Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and even Rihanna, he became one of the most influential artists in the field since the mid ‘90s. In this keynote, he shares reflections on a lifetime of shaping the visual culture of heavy metal music.
