NIGHT SHIFT II: keiyaA, Mika Oki, ssaliva, ugne&maria

The third evening of NIGHT SHIFT takes place on Saturday the first of July and sees electronic musicians turn the experience of clubbing into a moment rooted in the senses. Summoning feelings of melancholy and vulnerability, keiyaA, Mika Oki, ssaliva and ugne&marie transform K1 into an intimate environment where emotions are left free to wander...

Mika Oki 

Mika Oki is a French-Japanese visual and sound artist born in 1990 living and working in Brussels. With a background in sculpture and electroacoustic music, she explores intangible spaces and emotional landscapes through video and sound installations. Oki uses abstract sound textures and dynamic mental images that perfectly intersect with the worlds of club music and ambient sound experimentation. Mika Oki is also a DJ and producer with a wide musical spectrum, as well as a radio programmer and event organiser. She runs the Belgian branch of LYL Radio and actively fights for the inclusion of women in today’s music scene alongside female: pressure and Psst Mlle.

In the context of NIGHT SHIFT II, Mika Oki has created a new ephemeral and open-ended installation using the fleeting materials of light, smoke, and music. Imagined as a triptych, the work is experienced in a whole new light every evening on the upper floor of the building.

keiyaA 

keiyaA is an American singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist born in Chicago in 1992. Her music combines her training in jazz with a penchant for R&B and her hip-hop upbringing to create new sounds overlayed with a powerful and sensual voice. In March 2020, she independently released her first album, Forever, Ya Girl on her own label. Composed of introspective tracks mixing R&B and electronic sounds, it paints the emotional portrait of a Black woman in an ultra-capitalist world.

ssaliva 

ssaliva (also known as François Boulenger) is a multidisciplinary artist born in Liège in 1983 who has been active since the late 1990s. After years of operating under the alias Cupp Cave composing alternative hip-hop and dance beats, in 2011 ssaliva began developing hypnotic soundscapes based on loose rhythms, lush tones, and crystallised textures, which he likes to describe as a personal and romantic interpretation of life between nature and urban pollution. ssaliva is performing a previously unseen live audiovisual show at K1!

ugne&maria 

ugne&maria is the electroacoustic music duo project of Ugnė Vyliaudaitė and Marija Rasa Kudabaitė, both from Lithuania and now based in Brussels. Their musical output began in 2016 with a live debut in Brussels and continued with various experimentations using violin, synthesizers, sampling techniques, and voice. Their music is made from a mosaic of samples and carefully triggered field recordings. Intricate and calming but far from ambient, in that where ambient music recedes ugne&maria’s music sounds always close to the skin.
