Morvern wakes up on Christmas morning and discovers her boyfriend has committed suicide. He left her a mixtape, Christmas gifts, a goodbye note, and the manuscript of his unpublished novel. Morvern decides to send the manuscript to the publisher in her own name, and she pretends her boyfriend has left her. Her deceit escalates and her behaviour gets increasingly erratic when the lies keep piling up.
Adrian Martin: “Lynne Ramsay’s films offer some of the purest examples of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s main principle for a cinema of poetry: begin by entering the mind of a disturbed or troubled person, and then show the world anew, as they see it.”
