Netflix-style theatre on art, forgery and emotion
With a deliberate typographical error in the title, the sought-after Polish iconoclast Łukasz Twarkowski nods to imitation brands like Adibas and Dolce Banana. Following the spectacular QUANTA, which graced the Red Hall last season, he once again shakes up the international theatre landscape. ROHTKO is a monumental spectacle, inspired by one of the greatest scandals in the art world. This emerged when an unsuspecting couple purchased a forged painting by Mark Rothko for over eight million dollars, only to discover that the renowned New York gallery Knoedler had been dealing in forgeries of Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Motherwell for years.
In a large-scale spectacle brimming with pulsating beats, video projections, dynamic set changes, and intertwining storylines, Twarkowski questions whether fake can also be real. Whether a forgery can evoke genuine emotions. According to the Chinese philosophy of ‘shanzai’, it certainly can. In this concept, an original product is not fixed but serves as a starting point for creative interpretation. One thing is certain: what applies to Rothko's paintings also holds true for Twarkowski's so-called ‘Netflix theatre’. Once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it. Fake or not.
