le chemin se fait en marchant - crédit Margot Briand

Le chemin se fait en marchant (The path is made by walking), the first creation by choreographer Areti Chourdaki, is an invitation to take time. To slow down.

Through practices tied to both choreography and crafts (knitting, beading, sewing), Areti Chourdaki invites us to observe the creative process of the show in progress. Before our very eyes, she sheds light on the path, the work involved and the time it takes to create a piece, to transform it and even to go further by granting herself the freedom to undo, destroy and let what has just been created collapse … before starting over again.

A live performance where time is ritual, patience mechanical, space fragile and the body at work.

Biography

'Originally from Cyprus, I entered the Centre national de danse contemporaine of Angers in 2017 before moving to Brussels in 2020. The following year, I created E|C|H|G|O, a three-hour choreographic situation, presented at the 18th Nea Kinisi Summer Dance Festival. That same year, I enrolled in the master’s programme in Dance and Choreographic Practices at Charleroi Danse, INSAS and La Cambre in Brussels, where I explored “the body as an archive of systematics”. My choreographic work revolves around exploring the limits of the human body, in particular endurance. I experiment with repetition as a process that is both physical and perceptive, a test of limits: those of my body, of boredom and exhaustion, and of the gaze and attention, which fade and tire.

Knitting is a central medium in my practice: a method of creation where repetition becomes structural. In my performances, my creations, made by hand, are used as costumes and scenographic tools, thus prolonging the dialogue between body and material.

In parallel with my creative work, I embody the performative sculptures of Yvan Clédat and Coco Petitpierre (Funny Game), I move to the steps of a dance for the end of the world by Diamanto Hatzizaharia and I participate in the performative board game The future is dark which is the best thing a future can be by Petros Konnaris and Rodia Vomvolou.’
